記者から「どうして高価なダイヤをわざわざ炭にするのか」との質問が挙がると、金石教授は「金銭的価値だとか損得勘定を科学に持ち込むのは誤っている」と、色をなして反論。さらに「バーベキューパーティーに必要なのはダイヤではなく炭。うっかりバーベキューで炭を忘れたとしても、手元に山盛りのダイヤと溶液さえあればパーティーが続行できるではないか。むしろバーベキューに持ってきた木炭をダイヤに加工したら非難囂々（ごうごう）になることくらい、素人のあなたでも分かるだろう」と、研究の実用性についても興奮気味に話した。
